This gilt bronze campaign medal was instituted on 20th May 1871 & presented to officers, military physicians, civil servants & men of the German armies, and to the crew of the SMS Augusta, who took part in the Franco-Prussian War 1870-71
Obverse: 1870 - 1871 within a laurel wreath upon the Iron Cross
Reverse: Crowned monogram of King Wilhelm I & inscription 'Dem Siegreichen Heere' (To the victorious army), surrounded by 'Gott war mit uns Ihm sei die Ehre' (God was with us, to Him be the Glory)
The rim is inscribed 'Aus Erobertem Geschuetz' (From conquered cannon)
