General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (564927 L.A.C. R. F. Oliver. R.A.F.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45, nearly extremely fine
Richard Frank Oliver was born at Blackburn on 29 July 1913, the son of Henry and Kate Oliver of Cherry Tree, Blackburn. He was serving Royal Air Force just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, serving in Palestine during the Arab Revolt there.
Posted to No. 24 Maintenance Unit in Shropshire during the Second World War, this base hosted fighter squadrons, being bombed during the Battle of Britain. Oliver was noted (Unconfirmed) at one stage as flying a Hurricane KX408 and conducting a forced landing in Scotland suggesting that he may have had a flying role at some stage during the war. This was not to last however as he was diagnosed with carcinomatosis during this time, this proved to be terminal and he died on 9 April 1943, being buried at Church of St Mary and All Saints, Whalley, Lancashire; sold together with copied research.
