Robert William Thomas was born at Audenshaw Road, Manchester in 1886. Enlisting with the Manchester Regiment he was posted to the 11th Battalion at Ashton-under-Lyme on 9 January 1915. Transferring to 1/9th Battalion Thomas entered the war at Gallipoli on 22 October 1915. By this stage 9th Battalion, who had stormed V Beach on 9 May 1915 were veterans of the Peninsula and had suffered heavy losses.

The unit was evacuated from Gallipoli on 28 December 1915 and sent to Egypt where they took up positions guarding the Suez Canal. Travelling to France on 11 March 1917 he was transferred to 2nd Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment on 18 June 1918. He was disembodied on 27 January 1919.
